The Art of Ikebana: So Much More Than Flower Arranging

Just a short 5 minute walk from the JR Utsunomiya Station, a friendly local by the name of Soga Takeuchi is prepared to share all of the knowledge of Ikebana with anyone willing to learn. She can pick you up from the station if you’re uncertain about navigating the area. Hospitality is at the core of her interactions, aiming to make her students comfortable and at ease for optimal creativity.

It all starts with a Smile!

Soga Takeuchi has over 20 years of experience and shares her passion for the craft with anyone interested in learning. She hosts those looking for lessons, or even a one-time learning experience at her studio near JR Utsunomiya station. There, she prepares her materials, tools, and an authentic Japanese snack for her students. These intimate lessons offer a quiet, one-on-one experience, not commonly found in larger group settings.

■What to Expect

There are ever so many ways of Ikebana, but through all of her teaching experiences, Soga knows that “Sogetsu Ryu” is popular among foreigners. This is because the technique allows any available materials to be used, offering more free expression. The foliage and flowers she prepares are often seasonal, making each experience an undeniably unique one.

■Watch & Learn

She first guides the students through the basics of Ikebana, and the significance of using specific materials and techniques. Then, she begins instructional demonstrations, where the students can observe her using the techniques and tools as she’s described.

■Time to Shine!

Now it’s the student’s turn. Soga has pre-prepared stations ready for her students with everything they need to construct their own creations. She remains available to supervise, encourage, and aid in their artistic process.

■Mission Accomplished!

Once the students are satisfied with their work, and their arrangement is complete, Soga is there to help take photos and revel in the finished product. She uses a special washi-paper backdrop and perfect lighting for capturing the arrangements in traditional Ikebana fashion.

■Tea Time!

To conclude the lesson, Soga will present her students with an authentic Japanese snack, like the Matcha and traditional tea cakes shown here. The tea cakes are designed to represent seasonal flowers and fruit, and are placed on Oya stone, a unique stone mined nearby in Utsunomiya city. A fitting addition to her experience.

Message from Soga sensei

I would like to help you create happy memories of your precious trip to Japan.

If you like, I can also help you arrange Ikebana in a special Oya-stone vese, which is a more free-style of Ikebana.
