Tagesan Fudoson temple is located on the hillside of Mount Taki, 10km northwest of Utsunomiya, and was founded in 822. It is an old temple that has prospered as a place of prayer for generations in Utsunomiya.
Kintsuna Utsunomiya, the ninth castle lord of Utsunomiya, relocated the main idol of Fudo Myo from Utsunomiya Castle to Mount Taki.
Fudo Myo is believed to be an incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai, the head priest of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
He is known as the god of fire prevention and business prosperity and will grant good luck and good health to those who pray to him.
Fudo Myo has a long history with the people of Utsunomiya, and it widely worshiped to this day.
The forest surrounding the main hall of Tagesan Fudoson is considered a natural monument of Utsunomiya. The mountain castle at the top of Mount Taki has been popular since the Middle Ages for its cherry blossoms in the spring, and vibrant colors in autumn.

Homa is a secret art from ancient India that has been handed down to the monks of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism for centuries. During Homa, the Gomadan is solemnized, a flame is ignited in a firepot in the center, and various offerings are placed into the firepot and offered to Fudo Myo. Participants of Homa will receive a talisman that has become the alter ego of Fudo Myo and has been blessed by the flames of Homa to purify your wishes and fulfill them.
With blessed talismans in hand, tour guests can depart from the grounds with their spirits elevated and ready to take on a new adventure.
Mount Taki has long been known as a mountain that emits good energy. At the top of Mount Taki, visitors can see a magnificent view of Utsunomiya from the site where a mountain castle was built in the Middle Ages. This option includes a hike up Mount Taki, about a 20 minute hike one way, followed by a traditional Japanese bento lunch provided by the popular Tofu and Yunami Kaiseki Gassan restaurant. Why not refresh your body and mind with great views and great food before your Homa prayer?
Experience the power of Homa prayer during after-hours at the temple in this private experience. Unlike the afternoon hours, the energy on the temple grounds changes at dusk to a tranquil, unique atmosphere.
With this option, visitors can also wear Yamabushi robes while on the temple grounds and during Homa prayer. The monks will explain the purpose of the robes and teach guests how to practice Shugendo during their stay. If you're lucky, you may have a chance to listen to the sound of houraigai [conch shell], which is a ritual instrument commonly used in Shugendo ceremonies.
